The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge - Start and Finish at The Crown Hotel

If you love a good walk, a bit of fresh Yorkshire air, and a proper challenge, the Yorkshire Three Peaks might just be calling your name. Starting and finishing right here at The Crown Hotel in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, this iconic route takes you over three of the most famous hills in the Dales; Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, all within 12 hours.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the sense of achievement (and the view from the top) is absolutely worth it.

The Route

The traditional Three Peaks Challenge begins in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, and that’s one of the many reasons our guests choose to stay at The Crown; you can practically step out of the front door and onto the trail.

The route covers about 24 miles (38.6 km) and involves around 1,585 metres (5,200 ft) of total ascent. Most walkers tackle the peaks in this order:

  1. Pen-y-ghent (694 m): The first and smallest of the three, but don’t let that fool you. Its steep climb is sure to get the legs working early on.
  2. Whernside (736 m): The highest of the three and known for its sweeping views across the Dales. You’ll spot the famous Ribblehead Viaduct along the way.
  3. Ingleborough (723 m): The last big push before heading back to Horton. Its summit plateau offers incredible panoramic views on a clear day, and you might even see the Lake District fells.

When to Go

One of the best things about the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is that it can be done at any time of year. Spring and summer bring long days and wildflowers, autumn offers golden light and quieter paths, and winter delivers a rugged beauty all of its own (just be prepared for cold, wind, and maybe even snow!).

Whatever the season, a bit of planning goes a long way. Check the weather, pack layers, take plenty of water, and don’t forget your map or GPS.

Before and After

After conquering the peaks, there’s nothing better than returning to The Crown Hotel for a well-earned drink and a hearty meal. Our cosy bar, log fire, and home-cooked food have revived many tired walkers over the years.

And if you’re planning to start early, staying the night before means you can enjoy a good breakfast and hit the trail refreshed. We’re perfectly placed for the challenge, and we even offer packed lunch options for guests who need them.

A Few Handy Tips

  • Most walkers aim to complete the route within 12 hours, but don’t rush it; the scenery deserves to be enjoyed.
  • Good boots are essential (and maybe a spare pair of socks for later!).
  • Bring plenty of snacks, water, and a waterproof, even if the forecast looks kind.
  • The National Park asks walkers to respect the environment. Please stick to paths, take your litter home, and be mindful of local farms and livestock.
