One of the best things about staying in Horton in Ribblesdale is just how much there is to see and do right on the doorstep. Whether you are here for a walking break, a short escape, or tagging a few extra days onto a Yorkshire Three Peaks stay, this corner of the Dales is packed with memorable places to explore. Here are some local highlights that are well worth adding to your plans.
Hull Pot
Just a short walk from Horton, Hull Pot is one of the largest natural potholes in England. It is especially impressive after heavy rain, when water pours dramatically into the chasm. An easy outing from the village, but one that still feels wild and dramatic.
Ribblehead Viaduct
A true Dales icon, Ribblehead Viaduct sits just up the road and never fails to impress. Whether you walk out to it from Horton or drive over for a closer look, it is a striking reminder of Victorian engineering set against big open scenery. Great for photos in any weather. Top tip… walk from Horton, then jump on the train back from Ribblehead Station.
Malham Cove
Only around half an hour’s drive away, Malham Cove is one of the most famous natural landmarks in the area. The vast limestone amphitheatre is impressive from below, and the view from the top across the Dales is well worth the steps. A classic Yorkshire day out. Can you name the Harry Potter film it features in?
White Scar Cave and Ingleborough Cave
For something a bit different, the show caves near Ingleton and Clapham are fascinating to explore. Both offer guided tours through underground chambers filled with stalactites, streams, and geological history. Ideal if the weather turns or if you fancy a break from hill walking.
Pen-y-ghent
The local mountain and the first peak of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Pen-y-ghent can be walked directly from the village and packs a lot into a relatively short route. A steep start, big views, and a real sense of achievement at the top.
Ingleborough
A longer but still manageable walk from the door, Ingleborough offers a full mountain day out. Broad paths, changing scenery, and far-reaching views make it a favourite with walkers. On a clear day, you can see for miles.
Snaizeholme
Tucked away near Hawes, Snaizeholme is one of the best places in the Dales to spot red squirrels. A peaceful woodland walk with a bit of luck and patience, rewarded by a glimpse of these rare residents.
Ingleton Waterfalls Trail
A firm favourite for visitors of all ages, this circular walk takes in a series of impressive waterfalls through woodland and ravine. Well-maintained paths make it accessible, while still feeling adventurous and scenic.
Whether you are here for the hills, the scenery, or a bit of everything, Horton in Ribblesdale is a brilliant base to explore the Yorkshire Dales. And after a day out, there is nothing better than heading back to the village, warming up, and planning the next adventure.
